2D to 3D points

Posted by Andrew Gaiennie on Mar 14, 2011 11:14 am

I'm working with old CAD files and was wondering if anyone knows if 2-D points with text elevations can be turned into 3-D points for a surface model? I have the latest version of Civil 3D to work with, but any solution would be welcome.

Not certain if your software can do it. But if you send me the file I can use InRoads to convert the 2d points to an ASCII file for or surface for you.

Hi Andrew

You could buy this, http://www.topogx.com/ probably a bit much for a one off job though.

Delicad do some useful programs, not sure if they do specifically what you're asking for though, although this would probably do it as you could process the elevation text and then use it as the z co-ord. There's a free demo version. Lee's InRoads must be something similar.

It's kind of funny how, every time someone asks a C3D question  here, a bunch of people chime in about how you can do it in pretty much any software EXCEPT for C3D...  :)

But in C3D, you have a variety of options.  If they are old Softdesk or Land Desktop points, you can convert them using the tools on the Home tab -> Create Ground Data pane -> Points.

There are also tools for "Move text to Elevation" and "Move blocks to Attribute Elevation".  You can find those by going to the Modify tab in the Ribbon, select "Surface" in the "Ground Data" pane, then look in the "Surface Tools" pane.

If none of those options work, then you also have other options, such as DATAEXTRACTION and Map Queries.

I would recommend Ezysurf.
It is an addon for Autocad and in amongst the lisp files there is one, whcih will do exactly what you require (text to elevation).
You may need to filter some text out before you start.

you can export the text to an ascii file using dxf2xyz. the text will become the z value - desc,x,y rearrange the columns so that it becomes x,y,desc import again to your cad.

Thanks for all the help. I've managed to get the texts to go to the right elevations and build a TIN, now its all about getting the lines to fall in place.

Celebration! I got it! I had all the parts the whole time, I was thinking the contours were their own object but I just had to turn them on in the display. Thanks for all the help.
