GPS Equipment

Posted by Thad Glankler on Apr 12, 2011 4:34 pm

Does anyone know a good dealer in the NC/SC/VA area to get a GPS rover setup from?

I have been given the task of gathering information and costs to purchase a system for our Surveying Classes (in a Civil Engineering Technology Degree).

We currently have topcon equipment so a data collector would not be needed if we stayed with topcon (the one we have runs our robot and is GPS capable).

Thanks for any information you guys may have and like to share.

If this is for a college I would suggest you contact Topcon directly, they have been giving VERY good deals to schools on their equipment. Many of the colleges in this area have Topcon gear because they get such a good deal on it, but you have to go through the company a dealer won't/ can't do that for you.

Mr. Wilson's advice is sound.

As for a dealer, I use Southern Photo in Greensboro.  They are a factory authorized repair center.  That is a big deal.  Whomever you use, should be able to provide warranty repairs on site.

I would get both the VRS and the base and rover setup if the funding is there. Your students would gain from experience with both.

Thad, you might wanty to check out the Carlson Surveyor + system....  They have great intergrated programs with their system.

Most of the manufacturers offer a "Rover package" that includes a data collector...normally at no extra or very little cost.  Leica, Spectra, Topcon, and Carlson all have one.

Contact Transit and Level Clinic in Cary, NC or Charlotte, NC.  919-467-7782.

Thad,

T. Wilson and Larry are right.  Topcon has some incredible programs for selling new equipment to colleges.  We've made several Topcon purchases for our survey program at SLCC and are in the completion stages of setting up a permanent base station for use with the RTN as well as CORS station.

Drop me an email and I'll get you in touch with the coordinator at the college and you can get the details from him.
