Project Management Software

Posted by Jim Fazekas on Apr 15, 2011 4:10 pm

We are currently using Deltek Vision as our project management software and are looking at switching to Axium. Anyone out there using this and have any thoughts? Thanks for any input.

We have been using Axium for 5 years. We still have yet to optimize its operation.

Why are you considering a switch.

The deltek continuing support price keeps going up and up. If you want to tweek anything within the system, you have to shell out big $$ for 'customization'. We viewed the axium option, seems pretty easy, and the price is good. There are a few drawbacks with axium that i see (automatic job #'s & data merge for proposals).

We use Deltek Vision in combination with our own iPJC.

o  Vision for time/expense entry and accounting.

o  iPJC for contact, project, and drawing records management.

Maybe take a look at http://ipjc.underhill.ca/ to see if there's something in it for you (it's open source software).
It's my dream that we expand PJC to handle time/expense entry, maybe in a couple of years. For now we too pay big $ for Vision.

What do you consider high fees? We still pay fees with Axium.

You can create your own job numbers in Axium. The data merge issue is a simple SQL database manipulation. You will simply need a good programmer available  whatever software you use.

Have you tried Microsoft Project? It is one of the best project management software that provides an intuitive and easier way to successfully complete projects. We have been using Microsoft Project Standard 2010 as a project management software with advanced features. Would recommend you try the Free 60-day trial version of Microsoft Project.

Thanks, we will take a look at it. We have been talking to Axium, but are looking for some options.

MS Project is good but people say it's too expensive. You might wanna check other alternatives here. Basecamp is good as well as freshbooks but we all have different specifications so we really can't say that one is the best.

So does that mean you don't get what you pay for when you use Deltek? My team uses a business project management software package that is designed for surveyors and engineers. It's called Latitude and this software package has help us a lot to manage our projects. It's a payware application but we get what we pay for. The vendors of this tool do their best to come up with what we want such as customizations and feature request.
