Direct Reflect (DR)

Posted by Jmagsr on Jul 7, 2011 3:34 pm

We are using a Trimble S6.  I'm wondering if anyone is using the Direct Reflect capability and what accuracies have you achieved with it.  I personally have had bad luck and significant errors using the DR funtion to locate building corners.  What about using it to locate a flat surface such as a concrete wall?  Can you get 0.01' accuracies?
Please let me know your thoughts on this subject.

It's been a while since I've used an S6.

IIRC the S6 has a rather large reflectorless beam and may return bad readings if a significant portion of the beam is hitting something behind or in front of the object you're shooting at or when you're shooting at a significant angle to the feature.

Which S6 do you own? I have cited two below.

Notice the way the specifications are written. Yes, there is a (2mm...) and a (+/- 3mm...).  The 2mm should probably be written as +/-2mm…

Make sure you read and understand the datasheet for your equipment.

Your accuracy/precision will also vary depending on the following items:
Target color,
Target surface texture,
Angle of inclination of your Total Station,
Angle of incidence to your target surface,
Distance to target.
