Topcon Robotic Instruments

Posted by Matthew Schick on Oct 5, 2010 1:55 pm

I am looking into getting a used robotic instrument and i was looking to get some opinions/reviews of the Topcon Robots.  My company has A trimble s6 now which is a fantastic gun but I'm wondering about the Topcon Robots.  They seem to be a little cheaper and i'm wondering if that has anything to do with the usability or such.  There also seems to be quite a few different models as well.  What are the pros/cons. Any comments will be welcomed bad or good.  Trying to make an educated decision.  Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty happy with the Topcon 8003A I bought used from Hayes Instruments about a year and a half ago. The satellite radios are a bit clunky so you might want to invest in wireless radios. ($1500 or so). I did have a few problems holding the lock in foggy weather but other than that it's been fine.

Tech support is critical to me and the guys at Hayes are awesome. Every time I had a problem, especially in the beginning when I was low on the learning curve they was always someone on the other end of the line  to keep me working.

I also had a Topcon 800A out on the Amchitka Nuclear site which is nothing but fog and rain....the robot spent more time searching for me out in the Bering sea then working with me onsite.

I bought a used GPT8005A about three years ago, and it works great. There are afew times that the tracking seems to get confused, especially when there is alot of glare behind you, but generally a quick reset will generally fix the problem. I use teh Satel radios, and they seem to be bullet proof.

I would not hesitate to purchase one again. I have used the Trimble 5603 and the Leica SmartStation 1200, and this one is my favorite, believe it or not.

Good luck.
