Are you keeping the Win 2000 install up to date using WIndows Update or Microsoft Update? There could be a newer function in the DLL that most people have and Google Earth was changed to use.

You can save marked points from GE into either a KML file (which is text readable with tags for each type of data) or a KMZ file which is zipped and may include customized icons or other special data. Go to File / Save and pick either "My Places" for the whole list or else "Save Place As" to just save the one you highlighted in the list.
