7.5 DRG Quads

Posted by James Whitaker on Nov 23, 2010 8:40 pm

I need 7.5 quads that I can insert into a cad drawing.  I see that the USCGS site has the quads in a pdf format and I did not see the images (tiff, etc).
There was several sites that offered what I need, but my links no linger work or have been deleted.

Can someone point me in the right direction?  Can a pdf be inserted like an images into a cad drawing?  I tried, but I was not able to do so.

I noticed that pob archives do not work.  Nice, could have researched this problem there.

Thanks for the help and have a nice day

I would recommend you just go to the libremap.org website and download geotiff versions of the quads you need, rather than mess with the geopdfs that USGS has at the USGS store.

The newer versions of AutoCAD will accept PDF's as an XREF, much like the older versions accepted TIF and JPG images. Cal-Atlas has tiffs of quads on http://www.atlas.ca.gov/

I purchased a copy of AutoCAD LT 2010 just for that purpose. I've been quite happy with my older version of Land Desktop.

What I do to insert quad maps into autocad drawings is:
I open the pdf and print to a tiff file.  I then insert the tiff into the drawing.  I scale it to fit approximately using known ground points, then I turn it into a block so that I can adjust the x and y scale factors separately.

I have been using this method to import all sorts of pdf images into autocad drawings for several years.  It has always worked.  It has allowed me to use quad maps to approximate section corner positions for search purposes as well as many other applications.

Good luck.
I hope that this helps.

Dean,

www.labins.org is a very good source for Quads, MrSid and other images... I noticed you were from Florida... They are available in state plane and other projections.

Thanks folks..  I appreciate the advice.

On another note, this site is not as dynamic as it once was lacking many of the old posters.  I now lurk even more here emerging only to respond to post of interest or one of my own.

However, I think we got what we asked for.

Have a nice day.
