Collect Elevation Data with Geo XH 2005 Series

How do I go about collecting and exporting/viewing elevation data with a Geo XH 2005 Series without an external antenna? I don't need it to be very accurate.

What data collection software are you using on the unit? I believe the newer versions of TerraSync allows you to utilize a geoid model. Esri based software does not utilize a geoid model, but does allow a geoid seperation value to be entered for elevations. However, this is only useful if your area to be mapped is smaill. If using ArcGIS Desktop you could do calculations from ellipsoid height to orthometric height.

If you are using TerraSync in conjunciton with Pathfinder Office you should be able to build your feature list to include elevations, even if they are ellipoid values. If they are ellipoid values you can then convert them to orthometric heights after field collection is completed.

Just out of curiosity, what do you mean by "not very accurate"? The Geo X* series minus a fixed antenna can be wielded around like a garden hose for hand held work. That said the experienced user can do some fairly decent "rough" checking of heights by being somewhat disciplined with the units. I used a rough HI measured to my shirt pocket and held the unit very still during observations. Using Terra Sync to collect and Pathfinder Office to process I was stunned by the "accuracy" I would sometimes experience, actually as close as sub foot over known points at times. But there were also results that were a little less accurate, so to speak. Using a fixed height external antenna with the XH gives much improved repeatability in your orthometric heights. But even then, those elevations are only useful as a check.

Apologies for my ignorance, but how do I add elevation to the features list?

When you are setting up your project in Pathfinder Office you have to define your coordinate system, part of which you can select whether or not you want an orthometric height when storing features.
